Reminders

I'm fascinated by tombstones, partially because I have no idea what to write on mine.

"I told you I was sick" might not work, depending on how I go. I could be hit by a donut truck.

"Tread lightly" is a possibility, but I suspect it would encourage devilish people to stomp loudly.

"Are you ready to go?" has potential, since I'm always asking my kids the same question while I jangle my car keys. It's also fairly appropriate for the graveyard.

In a strange twist of fate, I discovered that my oldest kid also has a fascination with memorials. Last week, we spent most of our walk in the local park reading the dedications under the trees.

This was heartbreaking:

As was this one for a little girl, 4 years old:

Being a dog lover, this one caught my eye:

Coincidentally, while we were looking at the memorials, the sky looked like this:

Whenever I see the sky like this, I'm reminded that my time on earth is only temporary. I stop worrying about what funny quote to plaster on my tombstone and I picture myself in the Afterworld's hallway, staring anxiously at the elevator door, wondering if I'll be going up or down. I think about all the times I've blamed the dog for eating all the donuts, when I've pointed to my husband after some strange noise came out of my body, or the times I've snapped at my children for something the dog actually did...I really hope God has a sense of humor.

I couldn't really read the girl's one though it's heartbreaking enough to know that she was only 4

I love gravestones too. Really good way to remind us how temporary this all is. Thanks.

Mine will read - Damnit!! You said you fixed that!

I too love graveyards - if you are ever in Wellington New Zealand, there is a wonderful walk through the founding fathers graveyards.

I've never thought about what I wanted my stone to read... I'll have to ponder on this one.

Beautiful sky!

Gorgeous sky picture!

I wish large statuary would make a comeback as tombstones. Those older parts of cemeteries with the "not easy to mow" tombstones are always so pretty.

I hope God has a sense of humor, too, considering that a couple of months ago during communion, I spit out The Body of Christ.

Our usual communion wafers had been replaced by some sort of shortbread (read: eggs and butter, definitely NOT vegan).

As soon as it hit my tongue, I knew it wasn't something I could ingest and take on to my vegan conscience. Then, after I spit it out, I wondered if I was going to be able to smell the lightning before it struck me, since I'd just spit out an emblem of Christ.

Meh. I lived to blog another day.
